About the founder
Personal: Smyl Fitness Rx was founded by Terrance Walless after seeing his patients and loved ones, once full of life, gradually decline and lose their ability to do everyday activities. Raised by his grandmother, Terrance got an early glimpse this pattern. Those experiences led him to become a physical therapist focused on healthy aging.
Clinical: Terrance spent years serving Veterans in a center of excellence focused on aging, the Geriatric Research Education & Clinical Center (GREEC). His clinical experience spans from the hospital bed-side to working as a home health therapist traveling snowy Chicago winters to see patients at their homes. These up-close encounters provided him with a deep understanding of the challenges people face staying healthy as they age.
Business: After obtaining his MBA from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University, Terrance transitioned to the business side of healthcare. First, as a management consultant advising hospitals and health plans, then as an executive helping senior housing facilities and physician practices implement home-based care models to older adults across the Midwest.
Backed by support from the National Science Foundation and leading university research institutions, Terrance created Smyl Fitness Rx to help people use fitness to improve their health & quality of life.
